After a lifetime in the lawn care business, Steve Downin, owner of Right-of-Way-Turf-Ornamental in Columbus, Indiana, wanted a way to grow his business but he wasn’t sure how to realize his long-term vision. When SpringGreen approached him about becoming a franchise owner, he wasn’t sold immediately. So he asked his business partner and attorney, Jeff Rocker, to investigate. Rocker liked what he learned, but neither was 100 percent behind the idea of a franchise—until they visited SpringGreen’s Chicago headquarters. After that, Downin and Rocker were on board.

And what exactly changed the two men’s minds? “I’d say impact-wise, marketing was the biggest factor that made us give SpringGreen that second, third and fourth look,” said Rocker. SpringGreen delivers a highly efficient system focused on maximizing profitability while still providing value that left both Downin and Rocker excited about the possibilities.

“SpringGreen’s planning cycle and high recurring customer base has really helped us make our business predictable and profitable.” Downin added, “Even with the element of seasonality, with SpringGreen our business now is designed to generate year-round cash flow.”

Downin and Rocker are proof that the time to reinvest and diversify services is when economic conditions are good. Making the move to SpringGreen has given their business a strategic advantage, one that is preparing them for the future. “It’s giving us the ability to let this grow without harvesting from it,” Rocker explained. “The idea, of course, is as SpringGreen grows it’s going to pay more benefits downstream.”
